Traditional Escrima originates from the Philippines and is also known as Kali, Arnis, and under the umbrella term of FMA (Filipino Martial Arts).
Escrima Concepts is a modernised form that has been refined by Grandmaster Steve Tappin.
Escrima Concepts International has clubs across the UK and Europe.
No. Escrima Concepts also teaches unarmed, empty handed combat.
We frequently hear this!
Weapons help develop our understanding of range, power, and timing. We use the weapons as a training tool as they force us to move and work for positioning, and they move at angles we don't find with unarmed, which opens up our peripheral vision. All of this can benefit unarmed, empty handed combat.
If you already train in another martial art then Escrima Concepts can be a good companion art and complement your existing skills.
Escrima Concepts also teaches transition, which means that some of the weapons techniques translate into an unarmed version, meaning you are learning one unified system.
We train all combinations of:
We do this to give you a broader picture and a comprehensive understanding.
We also train with weapons to gain a better understanding of how to defend against them (if running away isn't an option)
We teach you how to use the weapon so you can pressure test your defences against attacks delivered with commitment and intent.
Yes! We would never recommend taking on an armed attacker, and as with all self defence, we would always advise:
A physical confrontation should always be the absolute last resort, but we also recognise that there may be situations where escape is not possible, such as being trapped in a confined space or having family with you that you cannot simply abandon. For that reason, we believe there is value in training for a worst-case scenario.
Safety is our top priority, and as a beginner you will learn the basics of movement, structure, and footwork, at low speed with no power.
As you progress, you will learn how to gradually increase your speed and power in a controlled method without injuring yourself, or your training partner.
Escrima Concepts has a structured syllabus of nine student grades that build on each other in a logical way, giving you a roadmap for your training, and allowing you to measure your progress.
It's not just a loose collection of techniques, and it's not a series of "quick fixes". Escrima Concepts is a tightly interconnected and cohesive system that is deep, challenging, and rewarding to train in.
Once you have completed the nine student grades, you then move into the Technician (black belt) grades.
